The Great Battery Roundup Collects Over 600 Pounds of Used Batteries from Tallahassee/Leon County Residents

Tallahassee, FL – On Saturday, May 17th, the Southern Waste Information eXchange, Inc. (SWIX), in collaboration with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), Redwood Materials, Leon County Government, Costco, Florida State University’s Institute of Science and Public Affairs (ISPA), and iHeartMedia (WTNT 94.9, WFLA 100.7), hosted the Great Battery Roundup—a community collection event for old and unwanted batteries.

The event was a success, with 72 residents from the Tallahassee/Leon County area dropping off a total of 608 pounds of batteries, including lithium-ion, nickel metal hydride, alkaline, and other battery types.  Small rechargeable devices containing embedded batteries were also accepted.

This event gave local residents a convenient and responsible way to dispose of batteries, which can pose environmental and safety hazards when improperly discarded,” said Gene Jones, Executive Director of SWIX. “We’re grateful to our partners and the community for making this such a successful effort.”

Proper battery disposal helps prevent harmful substances from entering the environment and supports ongoing efforts to promote sustainability and public safety.
